Who would have imagined that one of the most boring and done-to-death franchises, which was still making a lot of money, would manage to resurrect itself as its swansong drew near? hardly any! The Fast and Furious (F&F) franchise has spent more than 20 years exploring the world of racing cars, jumping cars, flying cars, and even space cars. These creative explorations have produced moments that range from “Wow!” to “Like, seriously?” Fast X, the tenth installment, is now available. It is thought to be either the first film in a three-part finale or the series’ penultimate installment.

Does this tenth movie succeed in bringing new life to this world in a way that makes you interested in the upcoming final chapters again? Are there any baffling surprises in store for me? This SPOILER-FREE review here provides the answers to that and a lot of other queries. Here is what I thought of the movie after having a chance to watch it beforehand:

Fast X Review

Fast X Review: Is the story good?

One of the most common criticisms of F&F films, particularly the most recent installments, is that the plot is flat-out boring, repetitive, and predictable. However, despite all the midtown mayhem going on with cars and action everywhere, Fast X still manages to dish out a fairly decent story.

It actually turns out to be a rather involving story with beloved characters getting some interesting arcs and some other big twists as well. Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes is the antagonist, John Cena’s Jacob has a one-of-a-kind appearance in the movie, some emotional moments that surround “family” and friendships, as well, and some long-lost threads are rewoven.

Fast X Review: You Beauty, Jason Momoa!

Oh my! If you thought Momoa was strong and masculine in his roles as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and Aquaman, a beefed-up hero, you can now watch Dante Reyes in Fast X, who gives one of the best antagonist performances in a recent mass-market movie. Momoa is not only the best part of the movie, but he also consistently brightens the scene.

Among all the other emotional and brainiac beings in Fast X, his fantastic sense of dark humor, unmistakable charm, supreme wit and improvisation with the lines, over-the-top treatment with the antics, and being a purely unhinged psychopath were exactly what was needed. Momoa merits special praise and a standing ovation for this performance.

Fast X Review: The Mistakes

A Fast & Furious movie will undoubtedly have flaws. But in contrast to many, I won’t criticize the “physics-defying” action and stunts because you get what you pay for. The blank spaces, however, appear in one of the parallel tracks involving Charlize Theron’s Cypher and Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty. Rodriguez may have noticed one of the biggest character arc dips in Fast X, where she hardly receives any character development outside of a brilliant and iconic one-on-one action scene with Theron.

One of the weakest points was this entire discussion and related plot line. Apart from that, the pace slows down as the pre-climax approaches because no amount of adrenaline-rushing action or crazy situations can make up for the sense of exhaustion that sets in. Even though the movie returns with a few significant developments still to come, it falls short there.

Future and Major Surprises: Fast X Review

Many people felt that the climax was rather abrupt, but it was actually meant to be a cliffhanger because the movie prepares the audience for at least one more chapter, if not two more final films. This is set up rather well, with a few heartbreaks occurring and a few very big surprises in store for us. It’s important to watch the mid-credits scene as well. Many people criticized the choice to keep this as sort of the prologue to an epic conclusion to one of the most popular and lucrative franchises in the world, but it now seems like a wise choice.

Conclusion: Fast X Review

First off, one of the most obvious aspects—on which I hope most people would agree—is that Fast X is unquestionably a vast improvement over, at the very least, the eighth and ninth installments. Fast X gives this franchise new life in such a way that anyone who had lost hope or interest in what had seemed to be a series that had run its course for quite some time can regain it. They can also care about what’s happening in this world and, of course, have a lot of crazy fun with the large-scale action sequences. And last but not least, watch Jason Momoa have a blast!
